Does My Homeowners Insurance Cover Theft?

home insuranceDo you know if your homeowners' insurance covers theft? Homeowners insurance is designed to protect you financially if your house is damaged by certain covered events, such as fire, theft, vandalism, or natural disasters. Break-ins to your home can make you feel uneasy. Replacing your items and fixing your property after a break-in shouldn't be a source of anxiety. In the event of theft, your homeowner's insurance policy will come to your aid. However, there are some limitations to your coverage that you should be aware of.

Keep in mind is that your homeowner’s insurance policy may have specific coverage restrictions for particular types of personal items. As a result, not all of your belongings may be protected equally. To be sure, examine your specific policy with your independent insurance agent.

Different types of property have their own set of limits, which are frequently lower than the general personal property category's limit. For example, your jewelry coverage could be limited to $2,000 under your policy.  Your agent can assist you in obtaining all of the coverage you require.

Off-premises coverage, as it's commonly referred to, protects your personal belongings when they're not in your insured house. It can be added as a rider to your existing homeowner's insurance policy in some situations, but it's usually included as part of standard coverage. Off-premises coverage is often limited to 10% of your on-premises limit. So, if your contents coverage is $100,000, your off-premises coverage is likely $10,000.

Keeping your front door secured isn't enough to keep your personal belongings safe from burglary. You want to know that if you are a victim of theft outside of your house, you are protected.

Make sure you have enough off-premises coverage in your policy. Increase your coverage limits, add a rider to your existing policy, or look for a different insurer with the help of an independent insurance agent.
